How to Choose the Right GSM for Your Project

What GSM Means
GSM is grams per square metre — the weight of one square metre of the paper. It correlates directly with thickness, stiffness and perceived quality.
Weight guide
- 45-52gsm Newsprint. Newspapers, inserts, packing.
- 70-80gsm Photocopy paper. Everyday printing.
- 90-120gsm Bond and woodfree. Letterheads, certificates.
- 115-170gsm Coated art paper. Flyers and brochure interiors.
- 200-250gsm Heavy coated and light board. Brochure covers.
- 300-400gsm Ivory board and art card. Business cards, packaging.
Folding
Anything above 250gsm should be scored before folding, otherwise the coating cracks along the fold and the job looks cheap.
